Oscar
2020 surprises giving the top prize for an international film
South
Korean Film takes the awards for best film and
best director. Brad Pitt wins as best supporting
actor and Joaquim Phoenix best actor
"Parasite"
was the big Oscar winner on Sunday (2/9th).
The best cinema ceremony took place in Los
Angeles. The South Korean drama about class
difference received four statuettes and became the
first unspoken English language to win Best
Picture.
In
addition to the main prize, filmmaker Bong Joon
Ho also won as an original script, director
and international film;
"1917",
a war drama directed by Sam Mendes, was left with
three statuettes; "Joker",
"Ford
vs Ferrari" and "Once upon a time in
Hollywood" won two each;
"The
Irishman" won none of his ten nominations;
In
the acting categories, Joaquin Phoenix, Renée
Zellweger, Brad Pitt and Laura Dern were awarded.
"If
the Academy left, I would like to take a chainsaw
and break my statuette into five pieces with all
of you," said Joon-ho, winning as Best
Director.
He
said he studied Scorsese and that Tarantino was
one of the first to praise him. "Not when we
cancel ourselves for the mistakes of the past, but
when we guide ourselves to grow, out of redemption,
this is the best of humanity," said Phoenix,
winning his first Oscar.
In
addition to the five songs nominated for Best
Original Song, the ceremony also featured
performances by Eminem and Billie Eilish.
The
rapper sang “Lose Yourself”, an Oscar-winning
song in 2003, when he didn't go to the awards to
receive the statuette.
The
18-year-old American singer performed with her
brother and producer Finneas. The show was in
tribute to the film industry professionals who
died recently, with a version of "Yesterday"
by The Beatles.
Another
outstanding musical moment was when a trio known
for playing heroines (Gal Gadot, Sigourney Weaver
and Brie Larson) introduced conductor Eímear
Noone.
For
the first time in 92 years, a woman conducted the
award orchestra, playing all the indicated
soundtracks. He gave the obvious, with "Joker"
and the Icelandic Hildur Guðnadóttir.
Best
Documentary
"American
Industry" won the Oscar for Best Documentary.
"Democracy in vertigo", by Brazilian
director Petra Costa, was one of the nominees in
the category.
Produced
by the Obama couple, the winning documentary shows
the contrasts between American and Chinese culture
during the opening of a factory in Ohio, in the
United States.
Supporting
Brad
Pitt won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for
his role as a veteran stuntman in "Once upon
a time ... Hollywood", directed by Quentin
Tarantino.
"I
have 45 seconds, that's more than the Senate gave
John Bolton this week," said Pitt, citing
former White House national security adviser and
his participation as a witness in the impeachment
process for US President Donald Trump.
It
was Brad Pitt's first statuette in an acting
category. He had already won as a producer for
"12 years of slavery".
In
her third nomination, Laura Dern took on a
supporting role for "Story of a Wedding".
In his speech, he quoted her father, Bruce Dern.
Featured
pairs
In
an edition without a host conducting the entire
ceremony, the second in a row, a few pairs stood
out.
Steve
Martin and Chris Rock made the opening speech. For
example, left over to multi-billionaire Jeff Bezos,
owner of Amazon ("He saw 'Story of a wedding'
and it looks like a comedy"). It was also a
joke for Martin Scorsese. ("I loved the first
season of 'The Irishman").
Maya
Rudolph and Kristen Wiig also made the audience
laugh at the Art Direction ad. Julia Luis-Dreyfus
and Will Ferrell joked that they did not know the
meaning of the categories best photography and
editing.
