Oscar
2021: 'Nomadland' is a big winner, with awards for best film,
direction and actress
A
feature film about nomads made Chloé Zhao the
second woman to win a directing category. Anthony
Hopkins, Frances McDormand, Daniel Kaluuya and
Youn Yuh-jung won
"Nomadland"
was the big winner of the Oscar 2021 this Sunday
(25th), with three awards. American drama about
nomads of the elderly without a job or retirement,
won the main prize of the night: Best film.
The
93rd best cinema ceremony took place in two places,
due to the Covid-19 pandemic: at the Dolby Theater
and Union Station in Los Angeles.
In
addition to it, the film also won two other awards:
Direction for Chloé Zhao and Actress for Frances
McDormand.
With
the victory, Zhao became the second woman to win
in the history of the category. Before her, only
Kathryn Bigelow had won in 2010.
This
edition was also the one that most rewarded women,
with 17 victories;
In
a divided night, six films took two statuettes
each: "My father", "Mank",
"Soul", "Judas and the Black
Messiah", "The supreme voice of the
blues" and "The sound of silence";
Anthony
Hopkins overcame Chadwick Boseman's favoritism and
won Best Actor for his work on "My Dad".
Hopkins
did not appear at the ceremony; Daniel Kaluuya and
Youn Yuh-jung were also awarded (see full list
below).
Oscar
musical performances were recorded and shown before
the awards. Thus, the winners were given time to make
their speeches without interruption.
One of the
most exciting of the night was director Thomas
Vinterberg, who won the award for Best International
Film for "Druk - Another round". The Dane
was thrilled to pay tribute to his daughter who died
just before filming in a car accident.
Frances
McDormand is one of the producers of "Nomadland"
and also won a prize with the victory in the main
category. "Please watch our movie on the biggest
screen you can," he asked. Then she offered the
Oscar to "our wolves" and ended the speech
by howling into the microphone.
In her
speech as Best Actress, she said that her voice is
"her sword". "Our sword is our job. I
like to work. Thank you so much for recognizing that."
The two
supporting acting victories were for non-white actors,
confirming a look from the Academy for more
representation in the awards.
Daniel
Kaluuya won the award for Best Supporting Actor for
“Judas and the Black Messiah” and his portrayal of
young activist Fred Hampton. In his speech, he paid
tribute to Hampton and the Black Panther party.
"What
a man. How blessed we are to have lived a life where
he existed. Thank you for your light. He has been on
this earth for 21 years and has found a way to give
children breakfast. Educate children, give free
medical care, against all odds. He showed me, he
taught me, he, Huey P. Newton, Bobby Seale, the Black
Panthers, they showed me how to love me, and with that
love, they overflowed into the black community and
other communities. "
The award
for Best Supporting Actress went to Youn Yuh-jung,
from “Minari”. At 73, she became the first South
Korean actress to win the award.
The
2021 edition was marked by some records and
unpublished achievements. Two of them were
achieved by the team of "The supreme voice of
the blues". Ann Roth, 89, became the oldest
woman to win an Oscar after winning Best Costume
Design.
And
Mia Neal, Sergio Lopez-Rivera and Jamika Wilson
were the first black winners in the Makeup and
Hair category.
